I decided this morning that for Halloween 2017 I wanted to do a music diary of spooky, seasonal music. Then I fretted, because I had to have done these repeatedly, right? Off I went to search, and…
Whoa. I haven’t done a Halloween music diary since 2010!! Woohoo!!!
Grab your beverage of choice, some candy from the bowl (hey! don’t grimace, I got the good stuff. Reeses peanut butter cups and Skittles, with nary a Circus Peanut or Necco wafer in sight!), and step below the story break to listen to some seasonal music favorites! Please give your sponsor some treats as you step across!
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. In no particular order, here are some of my favorite Halloween themed or appropriate tunes. Please add your own in the comments, and I hope I didn’t take all the best ones, I just had a hard time choosing. Not to mention having to walk away from the computer so as not to add #AllTheSongs!
- Dead Man's Party — Oingo Boingo I have this song in my walking mix year round, because it’s got a great beat. It’s just such a peppy dead people song!
- Zombie Jamboree — Kingston Trio It was a staple of my college men’s a capella group and they did it SO well. I’ve been hooked ever since. Everyone who does it puts a slightly different spin on it, too. This version’s by Rockapella, and dayyum what a bass voice!
- Bella Lugosi's Dead — Bauhaus There is no way a song named after the quintessential vampire actor (as well as being the original goth rock tune!) doesn’t make this list.
- Werewolves of London — Warren Zevon Admit it. You want a big bowl of beef chow mein right now instead of candy corn.
- Superstition — Stevie Wonder Thanks to Pandora’s Halloween station for reminding me of this classic!
- This Is Halloween — Danny Elfman Have a live Marilyn Manson verson!
- Zombie - Cranberries Not technically about Zombies, but… still. Think of it as a lead-in to the next song… Spooky Scary Skeleton
Re: Your Brains - Jonathan Coulton and as a bonus, this one is in ASL (American Sign Language) Spooky AND educational!
- Hells Bells — AC/DC “I'll give you black sensations up and down your spine...”
- Monster Mash - Bobby Pickett This 1964 live version of Bobby Pickett performing the song is a must-see for his facial expressions while singing. But… check out this one as well. It was Pickett’s last performance, and no one knew he was very ill at the time. Simply amazing.
- Spooky Scary Skeletons — because K1 convinced me to listen, and it’s addictive!
And last, but certainly not least… is it Halloween if we don’t have a Thriller dance?
Share your musical gems in the comments, please!
No tricks here, only the treat of BeninSC bringing us what you really come here for… the trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures that form the skeleton of this longrunning community diary series!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.

From BeninSC:
I liked this comment by Kerry Eleveld, in Kerry Eleveld’s fine FP diary on John Kelly and slavery, because of the incredible tweets from Ta-Nehisi Coates that it features! Read them! If you are on Twitter, retweet them!
Highlighted by PlinytheWelder (great nick, huh?!):
Is this wonderful and insightful comment by Front Toward Enemy, on how effective Republicans have been at making ‘liberals’ radioactive for their base.
Highlighted by 2thanks:
Is this comment by dijit on the incredible difference the Mueller news made yesterday! I agree! In GoodNewsRoundup’s diary about it! #letshearformuellermondays
Highlighted by Petsounds:
In Laura Clawson’s wonderful FP diary on Roy Moore and his unconscionable double standards, this perfectly accurate comment by Mickindetroit was replied to in this comment by Petsounds, and then by the highlight nominee, lovewinsalways, with this comment, on the misogyny and sexism at play in that politically toxic environment. (Heck, read the entire thread! #ambienttakeawayroymooresucks )
From yours truly, brillig:
Jen Hayden brings us the news that Fox News employees are dishing to CNN, say they are fed up and embarrassed by biased Trump coverage. Upon which nanoot drops mic with this absolute perfection.
Top Mojo ala mik!
