Ok, most of us are thoroughly appalled by the news that Alabama’s Republican candidate for the senate, Roy Moore, is a disgusting pedophile. We already knew he was a disgusting human being, a bible thumping, racist, homophobic, mean-spirited cretin whose capacity for intelligence and compassion could fit on the head of a pin. But a pedophile?
In hindsight, I guess it isn’t really that much of a surprise. His overwrought obsession with the Ten Commandments should have been a clue. When people rant and rave constantly about their devotion to the Lord’s word, the Good Book, and against the ravages of sin, you’ve got to know that they’re overcompensating for a deep dark secret they’re praying never gets out.
Well, sorry Roy, it’s out, and if we had any doubt about the woman’s story of what you did to her when she was a vulnerable 14 year-old, we were convinced by the fact that three other women who were near her age when you attacked them told remarkably similar stories. God knows how many more women are out there who could corroborate the charges.
However, Roy Moore’s depravity is not really the point of my post. We all know that perverts like Moore exist and we are forced to deal with them as best we can. What is shocking is that the evangelical, family values Republicans, defenders to the death of life before birth and opposite sex marriage will not only still vote for him, they’ll probably elect this sex offender to be their next representative in the United States Senate.
Instead of demanding an investigation into his crimes, these conservative Christians who sit in judgement of everyone else’s morals are quite willing to compromise their own rather than see a Democrat get elected. When asked how these revelations affect their feelings about Moore, all of them say, and I mean all of them, that it’s no big deal, even if it’s true it happened so long ago, it doesn’t matter. Come Sunday morning, I have no doubt that the ministers in their churches will be saying exactly the same thing.
Because at their core, these good Christian Americans are flaming hypocrites whose belief in the commandments from their Lord is a mile wide and an inch deep. If Moore was a Democrat, they’d be pulling out the tar and feathers, screaming for his scalp and talking about the corroding influence of Hollywood.
But Moore is not a Democrat. He’s a card-carrying, rightwing conservative who hates homos, loves guns and worships the Ten Commandments (or at least some of them). He’s one of them, even if his attraction to post-pubescent girls is not just sick but against the law in all 50 states. That’s why the Republicans in Alabama will most likely elect Roy Moore. Then they’ll go back to railing about the liberals and the moral decline of America like nothing ever happened.
