For those who still feel that Senator Al Franken should resign, did this guy?
Millionaire playboy Senator leaves a party with a young woman who is not his wife. Drunk drives his car into a tidal channel where it immediately sinks. He escapes, but leaves the girl trapped in the car. But she doesn’t drown, at least not according to the diver who recovered her body. Subsisting on a bubble of air trapped in the submerged car, it takes her between three and four hours to suffocate. He returns to his hotel room and doesn’t report the accident to anyone for 10 hours. He then proceeds to lie his ass off about the incident.
Ted Kennedy not only doesn’t resign, but serves another 40 years, ultimately becoming known as “The Lion of the Senate,” beloved hero to liberals everywhere.
Now, I am not trying to justify anyone’s behavior. But even the worst possible interpretation of the Franken GropergateTM affair absolutely pales in comparison to Chappaquiddick. In my opinion, not only should Kennedy have resigned, he should have done time. But he didn’t, and what he did was orders of magnitude more heinous than Gropergate. In fact, Kennedy’s sexually predatory behavior was just the catalyst of the events that led to Ms. Kopechne's tragic death.
BTW, I’ve seen some huffy comments to the effect that if the Franken picture was a joke, it was in “the worst possible taste.” I submit the picture above to challenge that assertion. This is what a joke in the worst possible taste looks like, courtesy of the defunct National Lampoon.
Perspective, people. We can’t view every incident as the worst thing that ever happened.
