Politico’s Seung Min Kim reports on the result of Senate Republicans’ meeting with Donald Trump regarding a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) fix:
”Shorter Republicans to Dreamers: Drop Dead,” tweeted immigrant rights leader and America’s Voice founder Frank Sharry. “Idea that they are going to do this later is bullshit. Later means never.” He’s right. Trump created this mess by ending DACA and now it’s up to Congress to fix it. What we need is the DREAM Act, and now.
“This is a moment of truth,” Sharry continued. Paul Ryan has already said he wants a legislative fix but he continues to play with 800,000 lives by not allowing the bipartisan DREAM Act to come to the floor for a vote in the House.
Without a DREAM Act, 1,400 DACA recipients will lose their work permits and protection from deportation every single day. And that will be on Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, and all their enablers in Congress.
As Politico noted, “if Trump stands by his comments, it will increase the odds of a government shutdown, as Republican leadership will almost certainly need a large chunk of votes from Democrats to keep the government open.”
California Senator Kamala Harris has already promised that “she will not vote for an end-of-year spending bill until we are clear about what we are going to do to protect and take care of our DACA young people in this country.”
“Right now we are at a moment in time where we have got to understand that this is something we cannot play politics with, when we have hundreds of thousands of young people who are terrified because we have not been able to keep our word,” she said.
