As details emerge of yet another mass shooting, just 35 days after the most deadly mass shooting in this nation’s history, Republican lawmakers continue to “ask for prayers,” and say that it’s “not the right time” to talk about sensible gun control measures. If not now, when?
Is now the time to talk about the Orlando night club shooting, which killed 49, almost a year and a half ago?
How about the Sandy Hook mass shooting, which took the lives of 27, nearly five years ago?
Or maybe the Aurora theater shooting, which happened just over five years ago?
Or maybe it’s still too soon to talk about those.
Do you remember the Virginia Tech shooting? Over 10 years ago now. Is now the right time? Or do we still need just a little more time to talk about that one?
Maybe the Wedgwood Baptist church shooting, since those people were visiting a house of worship in Texas, as well? Certainly it’s the right time now, since it happened almost a decade ago? Or maybe just a few more “prayers and thoughts” is all the victims and families need? Just maybe, if the parishioners of Texas First Baptist Church prayed just a little harder before hand, this wouldn’t have happened.
Or Columbine? It seems like it hardly makes the news anymore, so could now be the time to revisit that tragedy to keep mentally unstable people from owning firearms?
And lest we forget, the USPS shooting happened over 30 years ago. It seems that the only thing we remember from that tragedy is the “going postal” phrase that has forever been added to our lexicon. It must certainly be the right time now, right?
