I visited the John Heinz NWR in Philadelphia about a month ago and saw relatively little migratory duck action. A visit this past week was a bit different.
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.
We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.
Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.

Oh yeah… ducks too.
If I see green-headed ducks my initial impression is “mallards”. And then I see that huge bill.
I waited about a minute for this duck to swim out of a shadowed area into a spot with better light. And got a nice reflection effect as well. :)
* — Probably a grackle.
Seen and not photoed, or not included here due to poor photo quality:
Canada Goose, Yellow-rumped Warbler, American Robin, Blue Jay, Ring-billed Gull, Double-crested Cormorant, Tufted Titmouse, Black-capped Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, Red-winged Blackbird, Peregrine Falcon (two flew over), Song Sparrow, Black Vulture.
Others reported seen Coots, Grebes, and Bald Eagles, but I missed them. But I was one of the few that saw the falcons, so I guess it came out even. And the Gray Catbirds seem to have mostly moved on. And the Swallows in general as well.
