Another one of popular vote loser Donald Trump's judicial pick, another "not qualified" assessment from the American Bar Association. Not that Trump cares—he's cut the ABA out of the nominating and vetting process. But that doesn't mean they won't weigh in with the Senate Judiciary Committee about the qualifications of those judges.
The latest, Brett Talley for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama, makes four. Which means Trump is winning the not-qualified nominations contest. The last president to have an unqualified nominee—and it was just one—was George W. Bush in 2006.
In a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) released late Tuesday, the committee said that it did not have any concerns with Talley's "integrity or temperament," but that he lacked the "requisite experience."
"In sum, although Mr. Talley does not, at this point, have the requisite experience, the Committee believes that, given the passage of time and the appropriate experience, Mr. Talley has great potential to serve as a federal judge," the letter reads.
That's the ABA going out of their way to stress that they have no political or ideological problems with Talley, because they don't do that. But it doesn't mean he's not an extremist wingnut.
Talley has drawn some scrutiny for his online presence. He authored a 2013 blog post calling on readers to "join the National Rifle Association" and calling gun control legislation rolled out after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School "the greatest attack on our constitutional freedoms in our lifetime."
So there's that. Anytime Judiciary Committee Democrats decided that enough was enough with the farce of these nominations, they could do something like, say, boycott committee hearings and shut the whole damned thing down.
