They're not even really bothering to pretend this is anything but a selling out of the entire country for the benefit of the one percent any more. Sure, Republicans will make noises about "growth" and "jobs," but really when it comes down to it it's just all about stealing everything to give it to the rich people. Even now, they're trying to figure out how to make rich people even richer in the final version of the tax bill.
Congressional Republicans are in advanced talks to lower the top tax rate for individuals from 39.6 percent to 37 percent as they finalize a massive $1.5 trillion tax package, said three people familiar with the negotiations.
The move follows complaints from wealthy taxpayers in New York and elsewhere that their taxes could go up under the legislation because of other changes it makes to the code.
The change, if finalized, would amount to a major tax cut for the wealthiest Americans. And it would be certain to spark a furious response from Democrats who are unanimously opposed to the legislation which they already have been casting as a giveaway to corporations and the rich.
The people they're talking about reducing the rate for are millionaires. Literally. Only people making more than $1 million were going to be subject to the 39.6 rate, so now they'll get a break. This is supposed to be in response to the reduction in the deductions for state and local income taxes. Why did this bubble up to the top?
"Trump has received an earful from friends and supporters in New York, and last week signaled that he could support changes that he said would help a 'sliver' of people." So there you go. Presto change-o. The anonymous sources to the Post say this isn't a done deal yet, but it's a done deal. They'll just have to figure out how to screw the middle class more on the other end, because they can't let this thing add more than $1.5 trillion to the deficit, or it can't pass under Senate reconciliation rules.
This makes the myriad ways in which the middle class is screwed by the bill that much worse. It just rubs the noses of those 13 million people who are going to lose health insurance in the stench of class warfare.
