There was an orderly, legal election yesterday in Catalonia, for seats in the regional assembly. It was the most legitimate test yet of the claims that the Catalonian separatists make regarding whether or not they speak for the people of Catalonia.
Here is a summary of the results:
- JxC (“Together for Catalonia”) (the party of ex-president Puigdemont) = 21.7%
- ERC (Catalan Republican Left) = 21.4%
- CUP (Popular Unity Candidacy) = 4.5%
Those are the three separatist parties. They received 47.6% of the votes. Because of the way the Catalonian system works, they will have a majority of the seats — two fewer than they did before.
Take away points:
1) Obviously, Catalans were not swayed one bit by the drama of October.
2) The Catalan separatist movement is to Catalonia as a whole as Donald Trump is to America.
