On Sunday November 5, the day of the church shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, I was a few hours away in Houston helping to take down and pack the quilt exhibits from this year’s International Quilt Festival. Perhaps the most powerful exhibit was of the work of Thomas Knauer, who was a columnist for Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine. Between Me and the World: Identity and Activism in Quilts is not what it appears to be upon first glance. The artist statements with each quilt explain the deeper meaning. Hard subjects in a soft material.
