Like many of you, it has been a rough week for me what with the new tax bill’s passage in the Senate, still more allegations of abuse from powerful men, and fighting off the feeling that hope is slipping away. Institutions were supposed to be the bulwark against fallible humanity but something funny happened on the way to reality. It turns out that our institutions are just as fallible as we are. The question now is, how do we move forward from here?
But first, a word from our sponsors ...
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
It seems that those of us in Iowa failed in our attempt to make enough constituent phone calls to our Republican senators to keep them from voting for the greatest wealth transfer from the middle class to the wealthy in my lifetime. And yet they still made public statements touting the bill’s promises for that same middle class. At least their Facebook pages recorded our anger at the votes. Both pages recorded almost two to one negative reactions.
As brillig’s picture so beautifully states, you are what you do and the Senate voted to rob and steal for the rich while stripping everything from healthcare to teachers spending their own money for students to graduate students’ ability to pay tuition tax free. They are nothing short of robber barons and reverse Robin Hoods.
And then there’s the problem with men that continues to raise its ugly head. It seems like each day comes with news of another powerful man abusing his power to objectify and attack women with whom they work. And these are just the people we know about. What about all of the women working in places out of the public eye with even less power over their positions? Where do they go? What recourse do they have?
As we continue to witness the erosion of public discourse in this country, I wonder where this will all lead. It may be the darkest before the dawn but I fear that we are only at dusk. We are still a year away from the next Congressional elections and 2020 feels like a lifetime away.
Sorry for the gloom and doom today. I’m frustrated. And I am scared. Let’s hope that the next week brings us some good news. Paging Robert Meuller …
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.

From Tamar:
Great comment from fromer, describing accurately both Trump and the Republicans.
From MikeTheLiberal:
This comment by pdxcharlie is definitely worthy. From Hunter’s White House rushes to protect Trump after Trump tweet seemingly admitting to obstruction of justice.
And another one, this time by flavor411 and found in ExpatGirl’s Orrin Hatch Seems To Think Children Helped by CHIP Are Lazy Takers.
