I thought I would share a quick note I just posted under Senator Collins contact menu on her government website. I requested a reply — not looking for anything soon.
Dear Senator Collins,
This is now your legacy. All you have done before is overwhelmed by your decision to put party over people. Your decision to put the demands of the extremely wealthy over the needs and desperation of the vast majority of Maine residents (and of America itself). You cannot lie to yourself and say you believe the words of Senator McConnell when you have watched him violate his oath to the constitution and allow the President to appoint a Supreme Court Justice by instead refusing to hold hearings until his man was in office. He lost his integrity years ago – now you have put yours in question. This is your legacy.
Margaret Chase Smith was an astounding moderate Republican politician from Maine voting both with her party and against as her intellect and conscious demanded of her. Margaret Chase Smith issued her “Declaration of Conscience” when her party was going beyond the bounds of decency. She said a philosophy that lacks political integrity or intellectual honesty would be disastrous. Everything about this tax bill lacked both political integrity and intellectual honesty. Yet when the time came for you to stand up for the vast majority of those you represent and like Margaret Chase Smith hold your party to account you instead chose to submit to the will of those with no integrity and complete dishonesty. This is your legacy.
I pray you will have one more opportunity to address this bill though I strongly suspect you will not. I pray you will review your decision should you have that opportunity though I suspect you will not. Senator Collins be assured – this is now your legacy. When given the opportunity to emulate Margaret Chase Smith and make clear that Maine is a state that will hold integrity and honesty as values that must stand, you failed. This is your legacy.
I find myself – a fifty plus, middle income, white male who has been a registered republican since 1984, no longer able to support anything or anyone my party has to offer. I am faced with following integrity and intellectual honesty – or following the demands of my party. I will not fail. Instead I will reregister by the end of the week and vow to never support my former party or its representatives until they have a demonstrated record of both integrity and intellectual honesty. Senator Collins – I too am your legacy.
Sincerely,
hedgerml
I haven’t voted for a member of my party in twenty years but I guess it’s time I officially switch to the party I vote for. Though I sure did love f***ing with their polls.
