My parents have voted Republican for as long as I remember (I can only remember as far back as the 1968 election when they taught me “Nixon Nixon he’s our man, Humphrey belongs in the garbage can,” however, they probably voted Republican going back into the 1950s). When I was home for Thanksgiving, we were discussing politics, which we have always done in our family, and my mother said that they were going to vote in the Democratic primary in March (we live in Illinois). I was stunned! They have voted in every single primary but always the Republican one. My mother said that the tax bill, Trump’s constant lying and tweeting and the Roy Moore situation were just too much for my parents to identify as Republicans anymore. They live in Peter Roskam’s district so he better watch out! If Trump’s antics and the current state of the GOP are enough to finally get my parents to vote Democratic, 2018 may be a bigger wave election than anyone suspects.
