We should filibuster Gorsuch’s nomination, no doubt about it. But we don’t need to trumpet it, or announce ahead of time that we plan to filibuster every single Trump nominee. The language should, in my opinion, be rather conciliatory — something like “we plan to give the nominee full consideration, and vote for or against on their merits”. During the hearings, dig hard and ask hard questions, including (as other Kossacks have suggested) how he feels about taking Garland’s seat. Stuff will undoubtedly come up that demonstrates why he’s unacceptable. Then, when it’s time to vote on cloture, stand firm. Explain why, but in non-grandiose terms — “we don’t believe this candidate meets XYZ criteria...”… make the Republicans explain why they are eliminating the filibuster. Put the onus on them. Don’t give them any ammunition by making it obvious that this is the strategy going forward.
Yes, this is playing politics. We shouldn’t be afraid to be political. We should play hard and fight to win.
