I've been hearing Republicans denounce regulations for over 40 years. I virtually never hear Democrats defend them, which is too bad because it's not a hard case to make. And they really ought to: people need to be reminded. And it's central to the argument for government.
Virtually every regulation on the books was created to address some real, tangible instance of fraud, exploitation, or private gain at the expense of the public. Things like unsafe working conditions, shoddy and perilous construction practices, unsanitary food handling, industrial pollution of our air and water.
The GOP acts as if these are stupid and arbitrary restrictions on entrepreneurs just trying to make an honest living. But it's exactly the opposite: regulations exist so people who truly want to do good work aren't at a severe disadvantage against amoral competitors willing to cut corners at the expense and misery of everybody but themselves.
Conservatives like to pretend progressives are wooly-headed idealists who don't understand the harsh realities of the world. What's more naive than to think that businesses will be wonderful neighbors and employers if they were unleashed from so-called 'burdensome' regulations?
They don't hate regulations because regulations don't work: they hate them because they do. When you hear Republicans condemn regulations, these are people saying that they want greater license to profit at your expense.
