A new national survey by the well-respected Pew Research Center, conducted Feb. 7-12 among 1,503 adults, finds high disapproval of Trump but also high partisanship wherein Republicans strongly approve of him.
The poll found that Trump’s overall job approval, at 39%, is much lower than those of prior presidents at this point in his presidency:
Approval:
Trump 39
Obama 64
Bush W 53
Clinton 56
Bush 63
Reagan 55
The poll also found that the public sees Trump as untrustworthy—again much more so than other presidents at this point:
Is trustworthy:
Trump 37
Obama 76
Bush W 60
Clinton 63
The poll also found that the public does not believe Trump is well-informed—again much less so than other presidents at this point:
Is well-informed:
Trump 39
Obama 79
Bush W 62
Clinton 79
Pew’s discussion notes that the level of intensity regarding Trump is striking.
Fully 75% either approve or disapprove of Trump strongly, compared with just 17% who feel less strongly. Nearly half (46%) strongly disapprove of his job performance, while 29% strongly approve. . . . This level of strong disapproval already surpasses strong disapproval for Barack Obama at any point during the eight years of his presidency. The only occasion when strong disapproval of George W. Bush was higher than for Trump currently was in December 2008, near the end of his presidency.”
For better or worse, Trump has the support of Republicans and Republican leaners by very high margins. For example, his approval among them is 84%.
Of note, Pew also found that only 38% approve of Trump’s immigration policy verses 59% who disapprove. (By party, Democrats disapprove 89%-9% while Republicans approve by 81%-16%.
