Many people with personality disorders self-medicate with alcohol or other drugs, but Trump doesn't drink or use drugs. Prior to becoming President, Trump self-medicated with money instead.
To cope with the pressures and stresses of life, Trump surrounded himself with fawning sycophants and elaborate shows of grandiosity- all to buttress and shore up his large fragile ego. His wealth allowed him to do this.
Now that he is President, Trump's money isn't as effective in creating an environment in which he can function. He can't buy total political adoration. There will always be contrary journalists, disapproving protesting citizens and sarcastic late-night skits to torment him.
The closest Trump can manage are press conferences, carefully staged public appearances and large rallies that serve him as a therapeutic, cathartic release to all his pent-up stresses. Watch as he walks away from the podium; he looks positively refreshed.
I expect even more "therapeutic" press sessions and rallies in the future. Perhaps we should encourage them so he stays borderline functional. I don't expect the Republicans to use impeachment or the 25th Amendment to remove him as he melts down.
And we do want to keep his finger off the button.
