Jazz Fusion pioneer and guitar legend Larry Coryell passed away Sunday at the age of 73. Coryell was best known for his work with the band “The Eleventh House,” which had recently reformed for a tour in 2017. He was also known for his collaboration with Miles Davis, Gary Burton, Alphonse Mouzon, and John McLaughlin among others. His album “Spaces,” was a seminal fusion work featuring Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, and Billy Cobham.
I had the opportunity to meet Coryell in 1978 when I was in college and he was playing a gig at my school (warming up for “America”). He was kind enough to treat me to a personal rendition of this…
A great musician, and a great person who suffered through and overcame his own personal demons.
Rest in peace, Larry. You will be missed.
