The most famous forced gender reassignment in human history was ordered by the Christian church. The female in question, is one of the earliest names in the Hebrew Old Testament. Ruah is the first female listed in Genesis, the first book of the bible. She can be found in any Hebrew -English concordance or bible reference a follows:
Ruah - noun F (feminine).
A few thousand years later when the new testament was written in Greek, Ruah, still one of the most important persons to the church, lost her feminine identity and simply became a non-gendered person. Once the Greek was translated to English, Ruah was given the full gender reassignment by the scribes and priests who wrote the canonized versions of the scriptures around three centuries later. Ruah became male. This is one gender reassignment that was done without the consent of the subject. Two thousand years of history have turned on that decision.
I wonder how much pain, suffering, war, sexual abuse, infanticide, spousal abuse and multitudes of horrors could have been avoided through the centuries simply if Ruah - the Holy Spirit - had been given her place, acknowledged and honored as the feminine force, the mother - the nurturer, instead of the masculine force of the father - the law.
Also — As a post note for the eventual court battles ver abortion:
Since Ruah is described as wind, breath, air, this force is what the ancients were trying to describe before we had Einstien’s E=MC2. Therefore we might consider acknowledging the power of that “feminine” force. Since this is also known as the breath of life, the soul lives when it takes its first breath in the body. There are those who regard this as the defining something to describe when life begins. That is their “sincerely held religious belief.”
