Ok, I’ll admit, as a teenager/young-adult in the late 60s and early 70s, I found things like the Symbionese Liberation Army rather alluring. Even then I was skeptical, though. And now, having lived through that era, I see that every crossing of the line into violence and anarchy subtracted exactly that much energy from the movement they thought they were supporting.
In the graphical thought experiment above, there are those who are irrevocably pro-Trump (and pro Trumpian agenda). And there are those (thankfully) who are irrevocably anti-Trump. And, yes, there are those in the middle yet to be pulled one way or the other.
Our future depends on this middle portion of the political spectrum.
When either side crosses the dashed line into talk of violence or anarchy (i.e., rejection of democracy), that area below the curve is deflected from the “swayables” in the opposite direction.
And don’t for a minute think “it’s only talk”. We’ve been saying for months that Trump’s talk is to be taken literally. (And of course we’ve been proven right.) Our entire democracy is founded on “only words”.
We are fortunate to have pro-Trump crazies spouting off memes of violence and disregard for our government and its processes. They are, in fact, some of our strongest allies. Let's not be stupid and do likewise on our side.
