Republican Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky just introduced a bill H.R. 899 to eliminate the Department of Education on the same day that Betsy DeVos was confirmed by a vote of 50/51 in the senate. The bill is one page long, as shown in the picture above.
“The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2018.”
This attempt to eliminate the Department of Education, which was established in 1980, was first attempted by Ronald Reagan.
An Article by The Hill today gives a clearer description of this shameful effort, and names the republican cabal who co-sponsored it.
Seven other Republicans signed on to Massie’s bill: House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (Utah) and Reps. Justin Amash (Mich.), Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Matt Gaetz (Fla.), Jody Hice (Ga.), Walter Jones (N.C.) and Raúl Labrador (Idaho).
Expect to see this pattern repeated over and over again as republicans are emboldened in their efforts to join our so-called president in dismantling the government at the expense of it’s citizens and those least able to defend themselves. This is the second example in the 115th Congress so far of republicans introducing bills to eliminate major departments. H.R. 861 was created by Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida last week, which calls for the elimination of the EPA, even though our so-called president’s cabinet nominee, Scott Pruitt has yet to be confirmed.
We should not be distracted by the antics of #45, with his blatant and outrageous statements that can be easily disproved. Write and call your senators and congressmen immediately and ask them to defeat these destructive bills.
