As outlined in a front page story, Republicans are running with the Gorsuch remarks this morning, hoping they can paint him as a nominee who is somehow more independent from Trump, more palatable to the Dems. It is probably rightly theorized that these words were carefully chosen and are being painstakingly reiterated in the public sphere.
Our simple and straightforward response to this must be A Judge who becomes demoralized after hearing a few negative remarks from the president or anyone else does not have enough moral conviction to be on the Supreme Court. A Supreme Court Judge who becomes disheartened after an insulting tweet does not have enough “heart” to serve on the highest court of the land.
I would rather a SC nominee said something along the lines of: “There will always be those who try to sway the court with attacks, insults, and criticism. As a sitting judge it would not be my place to react publicly to any of that. As a nominee, I find his remarks both insulting and ignorant.”
Don’t let your Democratic senator be suckered in by this false show of “independence”. These statements, if taken at face value, are actually proof of weakness. Demoralized, by a little criticism, really? We need judges with courage, conviction, and heart, not someone who will slump into a state of disheartened demoralization in response to a tweet!
Turn this around folks — don’t swallow the bait. Gorsuch is unacceptable.
