It didn’t take long for Pennsylvania House Republican to bring the crazy to his US Senate Campaign. Instead, it started moments before his official announcement when the Representative engaged protesters over the separation of church and state and our founding fathers’ original intent on religion.
In the video below, Saccone started arguing with protesters in the Pennsylvania Capitol Rotunda as they unfurled a banner that read “David Barton is fake news. You are the company you keep.” David Barton, who is from the evangelical organization Wallbuilders, was supposed to introduce Representative Saccone, but could not be there for medical reasons. So David Barton’s son, Timothy Barton, introduced the Senate candidate.
When Saccone was arguing with the protesters over the first amendment and the seperation of church and state, I was able to pop off a question and asked “so do you think this country was founded to be a christian theocracy? Such as David Barton...” David Barton’s son did not appreciate his father being called out like that and the conversation goes south from there. Saccone claims that this country was founded upon “godly heritage,” which conveniently is named after one of David Barton’s books, and when Saccone is confronted about Native Americans being here first, Saccone’s retort was “well after that.”
In Pennsylvania 2018 is shaping up to be the year of the unconventional candidates for the GOP. Trump has emboldened people like Scott Wagner to run for Governor and Rick Saccone to challenge Bob Casey. There’s also rumors the Lou Barletta is thinking about jumping in the Senate race as well.
