There's an important agenda hidden in the so-called "bathroom bills" that has nothing to do with bathrooms, and that is not getting enough discussion. Here is the language from the version currently in the Texas legislature (North Carolina’s had similar language):
(b) A political subdivision may not adopt or enforce an order, ordinance, or other measure that relates to the designation or use of a private entity's bathroom or changing facility or that requires or prohibits the entity from adopting a policy on the designation or use of the entity's bathroom or changing facility.
Basically, this is saying that a conservative legislature can override liberal positions by cities like Austin and Charlotte NC that the legislature disagrees with. It weakens local control. If bathroom bills are enacted, it sets the groundwork to roll back other local regulations concerning not just LGBT issues, but also immigrant, drug, and environmental issues where liberal cities diverge from their state legislatures. Regardless of anyome’s personal beliefs about trans people, it is almost certain that people living in even vaguely liberal cities benefit from or approve of things that conservative state legislatures do not like, and which would be in jeopardy if a “bathroom bill” gets passed.
