This past week has been my spring break. Let’s just say that it was sorely needed and far too short. As my break draws to a close and I look back on it, I can’t help but wonder what happened to all of the things I’d planned to do.
At the beginning of break, I told myself lots of little lies. Lies like, “I’m going to be productive this week.” Or, “I’m going to read that book I’ve been meaning to read.” Or, “I’m going to redesign some of my upcoming lectures.” Or, “I’m going to get some work done on that dissertation manuscript that has been languishing.” Or, “I’m not going to respond to any student e-mails over break so I can focus on me.” Or, “I’m going to get up early and really get into a morning exercise routine this week.” Or, “I’m going to eat really well since I have lots of time on my hands.”
If you haven’t already guessed, this is the list of things I didn’t do this week. As for things I did…
Watched new episodes of Rectify on Netflix.
Started watching Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey.
Watched YouTube.
Ate pizza with ranch dressing and ice cream.
Exercised like two times and slept in the rest of the week.
Carried on full conversations with Zoe in which I admonished her for sleeping so much and not getting anything done. (Projection?)
Watched Beauty and the Beast. (And it was fucking amazing, thanks for asking.)
Ate brownies and sugar cookies.
Stared at the cover of that book I’ve been meaning to read and said, “Not today, motherfucker.”
Responded to student e-mails in a timely manner. Goddamn it. (Well, that’s one productive thing about break, I guess.)
As I look back at the stunning level of un-productivity that I accomplished this week...I’m not even mad. I think I needed it. I am moving toward next week with a sense of dread, but at least I’m refreshed. Maybe it wasn’t such an unproductive break after all.
What do you want to kibitz about tonight?
