Many Democrats chose their own method of resistance during Trump’s first-ever address to a joint session of Congress. California’s Rep. Maxine Waters took her protest to a whole ‘nother level: she didn’t even attend. As she said on MSNBC:
This is ceremonial. In this ceremony, people laugh, they smile, they shake hands, they hug each other, they honor the president. I'm not about any of that.
I'm prepared to interact with the president only when he puts up his budget and his agenda that I'm going to have to fight. So let's not talk about this ceremony in relationship to public policy.
🙌🏾 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Everyone should have a Rep. like Waters. Watch:
She stayed true to her word and watched the address from her office on Capitol Hill and sat down with Mic to give her view about his speech. Unsurprisingly, she did not hold back. From Mic:
"We still don't know what to believe," Waters said of Trump's speech. "Because of the distrust for Donald Trump, people listen to his words, but they're waiting to see the actions. The words sound pretty empty to those of us who learned to distrust him."
Well said.
