A court in Hamilton, Ontario has denied bail to 22 year old Karim Baratov, pending a June extradition hearing that could see Mr. Baratov sent to the United States.
Kelly Bennett for the CBC:
Accused Yahoo hacker Karim Baratov was denied bail Tuesday and will remain in custody while he awaits an extradition hearing that could see him sent to the U.S. to stand trial on charges related to computer hacking.
Justice Alan Whitten made the decision in Hamilton court Tuesday afternoon after hearing arguments from prosecutors and the defence team.
He said the 22-year-old had not met the onus to be granted bail.
"Sir, you will be detained," Whitten said to Baratov.
The Crown said Tuesday that prosecutors would be ready to start the extradition hearing as early as June 12.
The arguments about Baratov's bail prospects focused on whether his parents could understand and control their son's activities.
At the alleged hacker-for-hire's bail hearing in Hamilton on Tuesday, lawyers for the defence and prosecution presented vastly different perspectives on the ability of the young man's parents to supervise him on bail.
To begin the bail hearing Tuesday, Baratov's lawyer said the alleged Yahoo hacker has nowhere to flee and would not abandon his family.
"He's going to be at home, no access to electronics or the internet, mom and dad watching him," said the lawyer, Deepak Paradkar. "Not only are they well-meaning, but they are sophisticated enough to understand their responsibilities."
Yes, there are possible Russian connections, which were noted by Judge Alan Whitten in his decision.
The charges against Baratov stem from a hacking of Yahoo user accounts where as many as 500 million user accounts may have been compromised by Baratov and three of his cohorts.
All four are currently under indictment by the U.S. DOJ and two of the four men are Russian FSB officiers.
While the accusations against Mr. Baratov has nothing to do with the possible hacking of the U.S. election, the possible hacking of the election seems to have resulted in a higher media profile for these types of arrests in the United States and abroad
