There have been many stories (including this one) about how Trump voters have by and large stuck fast to him, despite his breaking every single one of his economic promises. In fact, this is so well known that SNL skits (like this one) have been written about it.
What could be the reason for this? Why would they stay by him, if economic appeals and their fear for their own economic future are what drew them to him?
Perhaps the answer might lie in the one thing that seems to have made some of his “populist” base voters start to question him: His suddenly inserting himself on the rebel side against Syria’s Bashir al-Assad.
His base, of course, as well as the Bannon contingent of his White House, is filled with Pat-Buchanan-style isolationists, who are isolationist because they’re bigots. They’re with him because of his longtime bigotry-based isolationism.
And they’re the most fervent part of the GOP base.
That’s why they don’t give a damn about Trump’s lies and 180s on jobs, China, Russia, healthcare, and the like. Because he has kept his bigotry-based promises as best he could — and he and his fellow Republicans understand this better than they understand anything else.
