Monday, Rep. Mike Quigley (IL-05) did an extensive interview with CNN on a wide range of topics: Trump’s pie-in-the-sky, ill-conceived border wall, the upcoming budget deadline and the Russia investigation. Rep. Quigley is a member of the House Intelligence Committee and recently went to Cyprus as part of the committee's investigation:
“Cyprus has a reputation as a laundromat for the Russians who are trying to avoid sanctions,” Rep. Mike Quigley told The Daily Beast. “It was extraordinarily helpful in understanding how the Russians launder money and why.”
Both the former chairman of Trump’s campaign and Trump’s Commerce Secretary have ties to Cyprus and the Bank of Cyprus.
The Trump administration’s Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, was involved in a business deal with a Russian businessman with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin while he was the vice-chairman of the Bank of Cyprus.
And last month the Associated Press reported that Treasury Department agents obtained bank transaction information involving former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, specifically transactions going through Cyprus, which AP described as “known as a haven for money laundering by Russian billionaires.”
While Rep. Quigley cannot go into specifics about individuals they are investigating or what they have unearthed thus far, in response to a question about Carter Page, Rep. Quigley said he didn’t want to mention any one specific person. He did make a statement about the Russia investigation as a whole:
Let me put it this way, in the totality of circumstances, I believe—if you compared to a criminal case, there’s probable cause to believe there was cooperation between the Russians and the Trump campaign. Beyond that I can’t get into those specifics. But if the American public saw what I have seen and they listened to what I have heard, they would want a full-throttle investigation into what took place.
