The Freedom Caucus got exactly what it wanted out of Zombie Trumpcare, now in its 3.0 release. They got the gutting of pre-existing conditions and essential health benefits—the things that have been consistently popular with Obamacare and the things that makes health insurance worth purchasing. Oh, but of course they made sure that they will be exempted from the new, horrible provisions. As Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) deadpans:
Some moderates are already balking, like this anonymous member: "If I vote for this healthcare bill it will be the end of my career." And this one: "I spent the whole work period hearing from people pissed about pre-existing conditions. This isn't helpful." They should be running the hell away from this, and likely will when the online and social media campaign the DCCC is launching against them kicks into gear. The new ads "will target 30 GOP districts, on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and they will explicitly point out that the new bill exempts them."
There are roughly 30 moderates who can make sure this doesn't even get to the House floor for the vote. Topher Spiro, who helped draft the Affordable Care Act when he worked as deputy staff director for health policy for the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, and who is now Vice President for Health Policy at American Progress has stayed on top of the whip list of vulnerable Republicans. Here's his list:
It shouldn't just be those 30 that get phone calls though. We need to shut down the Capitol Hill phone lines again.
House Republicans are hell-bent on ripping away our health insurance. Call your member of Congress at 202-224-3121, and demand they vote NO on a renewed Trumpcare that is worse than the one before. Remind them they work for you.
