I wanted to post something that came to me via Clarkisha Kent, who you might want to read when you have time to hit up her blog. I’ll link her Twitter here:
Anyway, she linked to this Twitter line from hoodfeminism. Given that statistically the majority of people on DKOS are unlikely to have more than one acquaintance who is a PoC, I wanted to share a line of thought. Think of it like the Andy Richter thread that just got posted, except this one’s from a black woman.
I'll never be able to sympathize with 45's voters, no matter how many hot takes y'all write about them. IDC IDC IDC IDC
They even start the exact same way. "When Becky McCrackerson pulled the lever for Trump in November, she thought it was the right choice."
"I thought he was just gonna take welfare from the immigrants and blacks," said McCrackerson. "I didn't realize he'd take away other stuff."
McCrackerson lives in Fuck Darkies, Ohio, an area hit hard by factory closures and meth use. It's a blue-collar town with hardworking people
McCrackerson grew up here. Father worked at the sock factory for 30 yrs until his back gave out while doing the Macarena at a company picnic
McCrackerson, a divorced mother of two who dropped out of college her freshman year, has worked double shifts at the Dirty Sanchez for 15 yrs
[The Dirty Sanchez is named for Erik Sanchez, the last Latino allowed within Fuck Darkies borders before mysteriously disappearing in '92.]
When Trump arrived in Fuck Darkies during campaign season, the town was giddy with excitement. "We finally had someone who SAW us."
Mark Yellsattowelheads recalls the day. "My wife and I woke up early to head over. I wore my red MAGA onesie. It was a good day."
Tom Atewithacoloredonce added, "I wore my MAGA hat and turtleneck. It was great. Trump really brought us together that day."
Another local who requested anonymity, "Someone brought out a cardboard cutout of Hillary and we set that sucker on fire at the rally."
"You could really feel the love."
I’ve talked about this before and I’ll keep saying it. A lot of PoC, especially younger ones, don’t consider the Democrats natural allies, are turned off by the notion that rescuing poor whites first will save the country, and are pretty frustrated that the moment Hillary lost, all gears switched over to saving those poor whites — poor whites who hate anyone that’s not white and Christian. This is a party wide issue, but nobody is spared. This anger is directed at the party, at leftism, at socialism- there’s even time to spare to talk about how exclusionist and racist Jacobin Magazine is. When Bernie said that Trump voters weren’t racist? Discussions like this one happened immediately.
So, the people that DO vote for your party — I mean, you’re welcome to keep making them feel less included.
And look, this isn’t about not pursuing the working white vote. But the language has to change so that it doesn’t make PoC feel like they’re being tossed aside for a group of people who hate them.
