Did Russian-bots actually influence Bernie-leaning voters? I'm not sure that question can be definitively answered. Many Bernie-preferers are offended at the very question, and some are going further and saying Russian-bots deliberately seeding all sorts of very nasty anti-Hillary stuff online during the campaign is a non-issue because IT DIDN'T INFLUENCE THEM.
OK, maybe it didn't. Even if we accept that premise, I think its a mistake to dismiss the effectiveness of the Russian-run-anti-Hillary efforts -- the campaign was extremely effective in creating ill-will on the Democratic side.
As a Hillary supporter I can tell you seeing the junk that was passed around by supposed-Bernie-fans attacking Hillary made me feel a good deal of hostility toward Bernie-preferers. Every time I saw some piece of outright nonsense about Hillary that was passed along by Bernie supporters I felt a surge of dislike.
I supported Hillary enthusiastically. My support was ridiculed and dismissed by Bernie-preferers -- OR SO IT SEEMED. I know for a fact that many, many people preferred Bernie in the primaries but voted for Hillary in the general. They weren't jerks and they weren't nasty. But the image of the Bernie-preferer, based on what appeared to be their online activities, was that of spittle-flecked, misogynistic idiots. I spent a lot of time wondering how on earth such people were even involved on the Democratic side since they seemed to hate us so much. (For those of you who don’t frequent Facebook I can tell you there was a lot of venomous stuff passed around that was every bit as foul as any rightwing-anti-Obama slur. Every nasty thing Trump said or tweeted was amplified by supposed Bernie supporters.)
Turns out, the image created online of the “Bernie supporter” was false, but we Hillary supporters didn't know that.
If I were a Bernie-preferer I'd be really angry at how my principled objections/concerns about HRC became buried under an avalanche of nasty, ugly crap. I'd be angry that Hillary-supporters thought I was a fool because they knew so much of the stuff being sent around was simply, factually wrong. I'd be angry that I got lumped in and associated with people who were deliberately trying to damage Donald Trump's opponent. I'd be angry that, in the eyes of many Americans, my support will forever be tied to a Russian-misinformation-campaign.
The Russians involved in this didn't just screw Hillary and her supporters, they screwed Bernie's supporters. Now, in the aftermath, while we have far bigger problems to deal with, there's still lingering antipathy and hostility. Which means Putin wins again, Trumpers win again, and the rest of us lose.
