Yeah, conservatives, you are going to get Neil Gorsuch. You pushed him through at the expense of everything.
The liberals are, apparently, beating the shit out of the Bannonites and Preibus establishment types in the backroom knife fight that is currently the Trump administration. New York bankers, and other liberal types like Jared and Ivanka, are going to be running the place a year from now. You’ll get a huge infrastructure investment bill, positive conversations with Planned Parenthood, a paid family leave policy, and a number of other “atrocities” for your trouble in electing Trump. I mean, fuck. Gary Cohn just told Elizabeth Warren he likes separating investment banking from commercial banking (Glass-Steagall).
The Trump administration will break you, not us libruls. Let me spell it out for you in layman’s terms. He doesn’t give a shit about your principles. He wants to win. And he will slide the knife into conservatism himself it means a bump in his polling. The day is coming when that will happen, and it may already have arrived after the Trumpcare debacle.
Your bastion of purity in the Congress, the Freedom Caucus, is under siege from all sides. Increasingly even party leadership sees them as the rump that they are. Trump wants nothing to do with them after Trumpcare. They are all alone.
Your wunderkind, Paul Ryan, is discredited intellectually and politically after Trumpcare. Oh, he’ll run the House going forward, but you will never again be able to go back to those halcyon days of yore where Paul got to traipse around to conservative think tank seminars and talk about how fucking poor people over is actually going to make their lives better, with a media happy to report it as if it’s credible.
And now your SCOTUS justice cost you still more of the Senate filibuster rule. Today will be just one more rung down the ladder, one more skip of a stone across the pond, on our way to a filibuster-free Senate. What comes next is the legislative filibuster. My misguided, rightist friends, the legislative filibuster will someday die as a small, weak procedural bump in the road on the way to massive expansions of what you call the welfare state. Your greed over replacing Scalia has ensured that. If you think us liberals are going to throw up our hands and keep the rump of the filibuster rule next time we are in power, you are delusional.
And the next time we get a Congress like we had in 2008, you are going to get unions, massive environmental legislation, single payer health care, a living minimum wage at the federal level, and more. You will never be able to repeal it all, because as you know from putting your hand into the fire with Trumpcare, you don’t get to roll back social welfare programs in democracies when so many people benefit from them. You will be reduced to some Euro-style right wing crank movement, while the GOP itself sells you out to act like British Tories (keep the welfare state, just make it cheaper).
And at that future date, when you are crying over what you believe to be the establishment of a socialist country, I want you to remember this day and remember what it was that you bargained away for your hero, Neil Gorsuch.
