Campaign Action
Donald Trump doesn’t give a shit about the Syrian children getting gassed to death by their country’s dictator. If he did care about them, if he did have an ounce of sympathy for their plight, he wouldn’t have signed an executive order within a week of being sworn in as president that effectively banned them from coming to the U.S. as refugees:
“I hereby proclaim that the entry of nationals of Syria as refugees is detrimental to the interests of the United States and thus suspend any such entry until such time as I have determined that sufficient changes have been made to the USRAP to ensure that admission of Syrian refugees is consistent with the national interest.”
If he did care about Syrian children, he wouldn’t have called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on,” a vile stance he trotted out at his campaign rallies like some decrepit rocker playing an oldies fest:
“Should I read you the statement?” he asked.
The crowd enthusiastically agreed that he should.
“Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on,” he said, adding the word “hell" for emphasis this time.
Supporters erupted in applause.
“We have no choice. We have no choice,” Trump said. "We have no choice.”
If he did care about Syrian children, he wouldn’t have stood on a Republican debate stage and accused their parents of being terrorists, saying about them on national television, "I can look in their faces and say 'You can't come'. I'll look them in the face”:
"Look, we don't know where their parents come from. Their parents should always stay with them, that's very important, but we don't know where the parents come from, they have no documentation. They may be Isil, they may be Isil-related. It could be a Trojan horse. If two per cent of those people are bad the trouble is unbelievable."
But fast-forward to last night at his Florida resort (not the “Winter White House”), and this is what the soulless cretin had to say about these children:
“Assad choked out the lives of helpless men, women and children,” Trump said on Thursday at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. “Even beautiful babies were cruelly murdered at this very barbaric attack. No child of God should ever suffer such horror.”
There’s no change of heart here. There’s no “evolving,” there’s no “becoming presidential.” Donald Trump had to say something in front of the cameras because he had to say something. Even a man who leaves the presidenting to his son-in-law Jared Kushner and white nationalist Steve Bannon couldn’t ignore the nightmarish images of Syrian children suffocating to death. After all, when is he not on Twitter or watching hours of cable news?
If there had been a real change of heart from Donald Trump, he would have officially rolled back his executive order and used that Mar-a-Lago statement to call on the nation to accept these Syrian children and their families as refugees. Instead, he’s creating more refugees by bombing them. He won’t accept them either.
