Welcome to Saturday Morning Garden Blogging!
Vol. 13.14
It’s hard to believe we’re into the second week of April already. Spring is just flying by which isn’t all that surprising considering here in Central Texas it began in mid-January. The temperatures have been consistently well-above average for months on end but fortunately we’ve also had slightly above-normal rainfall as well so everything is green and lush. Thankfully this past week was blissfully seasonal with warm (but not-too-hot) bright and sunny days. Recent nights have had just enough chill in the air to remind you that it’s not quite summer yet; it’s definitely preferable to having overnight lows reaching the 70s in March!
My work in the garden has been somewhat sporadic and relatively unstructured this year. I do what needs to get done when the mood strikes. It’s turning out more successful than I anticipated and I’m finishing projects in a timely manner. Most of the planting has been completed; with the unsettling and consistent above-average warmth I was determined to “beat the heat” and get everything in the ground before the temperatures spike and the sun’s intensity really turns brutal. I even managed to sow most of the seed packets I bought and many have sprouted and are well along whereas in years past I’m a bit frantic and usually just getting started at this point.
There is more than enough stress swirling around these days squelching joy and consuming energy. This year more than ever, gardening is my respite from the mind-numbing stupidity and mind-boggling chaos that constantly bombard us and I’m going to keep it that way. The garden is what it is and things will get done when they do and this year that’s fine with me.
And now for some spring randomness:
And it is that time of year again in Central Texas:
So what’s happening in your garden and how’s Spring coming along in your necks of the wood?
