Donald Trump is prepared to expand his schedule of meetings with murderous autocrats to include one more big name.
President Donald Trump said he would meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un amid heightened tensions over his country’s nuclear weapons program if the circumstances were right.
“If it would be appropriate for me to meet with him, I would absolutely, I would be honored to do it,” Trump said Monday in an interview with Bloomberg News. “If it’s under the, again, under the right circumstances. But I would do that.”
There is what seems to be a minor issue with this: Kim Jong-un never leaves North Korea. Likely that’s because leaving North Korea would expose him to people who don’t automatically regard him as god incarnate—including some who might like to test his divinity with something pointy. It would also mean leaving North Korea in the trusted hands of … well, there are no hands he trusts.
But that’s okay. If Kim won’t go to the Donald, the Donald can always go to Kim. Though there’s still an issue there.
Kim has never met with a foreign leader since taking charge after his father’s death in 2011 ...
This too can be resolved. Kim Jong-un shouldn’t think of it as negotiating with a foreign leader. He should just keep these words in mind: Trump Tower Pyongyang.
If you’re thinking “this is not normal,” that’s okay. Trump is right there with you.
“Most political people would never say that,” Trump said of his willingness to meet with the reclusive Kim, “but I’m telling you under the right circumstances I would meet with him. We have breaking news.”
Well … something is breaking.
