Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell’s (D. WA) re-election campaign:
EPA Director Scott Pruitt has dealt the Pacific Northwest a serious blow -- siding with Canadian miners over American jobs.
Pruitt struck a deal with foreign mining companies to proceed with one of the largest gold and copper mines in the world. The proposed Pebble Mine project would threaten Alaska's Bristol Bay, America's west coast and waters, and more than 22,000 fishing jobs in the Pacific Northwest and across the nation.
Thousands stood beside me to fight the Pebble mine in 2012 and 2014, and we won! But the Trump administration is doubling down on their attacks against the environment. Now, we must all work together again to fight against these irresponsible policies.
Join me, and keep up the fight to protect Bristol Bay from Trump and multinational mining companies. Sign on today!
Bristol Bay is home to the largest king salmon run in Alaska, and its sockeye salmon run alone supports almost half of all wild sockeye on the planet. 22,000 fishing jobs in Washington state and throughout the nation are reliant on Bristol Bay's sockeye salmon fisheries. For years, the only thing standing between the pristine waters of Bristol Bay and countless tons of toxic waste were the safeguards put in place by President Obama's EPA and the Clean Water Act.
But now, Scott Pruitt has placed thousands of fishing jobs, and the bay that provides them, in grave danger.
Pebble Mine could generate up to 10 billion tons of toxic mining waste, which could devastate nearly 100 miles of spawning streams and destroy up to 5,000 acres of wetland. It is hard to fathom what this could mean for the fish populations and the thousands of Washingtonians who depend on them for jobs.
Will you join me in the fight to protect our water from irresponsible offshore drilling?
I have spent the last six years in the Senate fighting to preserve Bristol Bay. I'm certainly not giving up now.
Thank you,
Maria Cantwell
U.S. Senator
