After what even the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg had to admit was a “tactical win” (in her analysis) in the leaders’ debate Wednesday night—sans PM Theresa May, who sent Amber Rudd instead--Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has given an “exclusive interview” to the Independent. And one of the headlines: "Jeremy Corbyn hints he could delay Donald Trump's contentious state visit to Britain"
This is a brilliant play by Labour, as Britain is fairly united in despising Trump and hoping that the Queen won’t be forced to host him. John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons, months ago announced that Trump would not be invited to give a speech in Westminster Hall. This “hint” from Corbyn is more of the same:
Asked whether he believed the former television celebrity should have to wait until a potential second term in office, the Labour leader replied: “Well, it’s not up to me as the invitation has already been issued.”
Pressed again on whether Mr Trump would be welcome here in October – the date believed to have been pencilled in by officials – he added: “Well, let’s find out that on 9 June.”
Of course, if Trump does pull the US out of the Paris climate accord, then Corbyn could make it more than a hint.
The Tories may have seen Trump as a campaign issue long ago. The UK government delayed his state visit, initially scheduled for June, to October.
The question is, how much will delaying the state visit resonate at the hustings? If it plays well, Corbyn could follow up with a more definite announcement early next week.
The UK election is next Thursday, June 8. Time will tell whether Corbyn has just played a Trump card.
