This is a difficult political moment for the Republicans, including Donny T: on the one hand, an act of almost-certainly politically-motivated domestic terrorism by a self-avowed progressive against a group of high-ranking Republicans. On the other hand, the shooter supports Bernie, so what is a gaslighting, belittling-befriending, disengenuously-Bernie-sympathizing Donald to make political hay of here? Let’s go to his Twitter:
*crickets
Obviously my condolences go out to the victims and we all hope for their full recovery. But this is terrible optics for the Republican party of the half-hay, half-gold hair. On the one hand, this is a slam dunk for better background checks and tighter gun laws. On the other, “Donald, your policies are leading people to want to “water the tree of liberty with the blood of patriots”, except for those patriots are not your own supporters, but your supposed ally on the left, Bernie’s.”
So from the Bernie wing of the party, we’re all sorry one of our apparent own has done this terrible deed. But let’s not lose sight of the politics on this one and let one nut job divide us. I predict Trump will not have a twitter tantrum about this one, will indeed go twitter silent for a day or so, and that, in itself, is a good political omen.
