This one starts with another flashback, showing Offred’s conscription into the Handmaids, and being tortured in the process.
Then, as I expected, Serena Joy discovered that Offred had accompanied the Commander to the night club/whorehouse, and she didn’t like it one bit. She hit Offred. She then forced Offred to take a home pregnancy test (which, BTW, are illegal in Gilead), and Offred is pregnant.
Serena Joy tells the Commander the news, and also tells him that he isn’t the father. Offred tells Nick. He kneels before her and feels her abdomen, and Serena Joy catches them in the act.
Serena Joy then takes Offred to an undisclosed location. When they get there, Offred is locked inside the SUV. She looks out the window, and sees Serena Joy with Offred’s daughter. Needless to say, she wants to get out of the SUV, and, also needless to say, nothing doing. When Serena Joy returns inside the SUV, she warns Offred that her little girl will be safe as long as there aren’t any problems with Offred’s pregnancy. Offred responds by calling Serena Joy a very impressive list of names.
Offred goes to the Commander to ask for his help in preventing Serena Joy from harming her daughter. He tries to offer some reassurance, but he also asks her whether he is the father of the child she is now carrying. She says yes, but he doesn’t believe her.
In the midst of all this, Moira successfully escapes to Canada, and gets a warm welcome there.
Offred opens the package she got at the end of episode nine, and it’s quite a bit different from what she expected.
There are two major surprises toward the end of the episode. I’m not giving any further details, but suffice to say that things are coming to a head. And, I thought there would be one more episode this season. No, there isn’t, and we’re going to be kept hanging until season 2 starts.
