Good day and welcome to DKos Asheville. This is the weekly DKos Asheville Open Thread for Saturday, July 1st.
We offer this space every weekend to share what we're up to in Western North Carolina and beyond.
We hope this group and others serve to invigorate us locally and regionally here on Daily Kos, building on the sense of community that's grown through our online engagement.
DKos Asheville and other local and state groups can give us all a better sense of connection, a better understanding of who we stand with, work with and share with. We hope this local and wider community can help leverage our orange passion for progressive politics to move the county forward.
Following is the Daily Kos Mission Statement and we are proud to be part of this movement, on the keyboards and on the ground.
Daily Kos fights for a progressive America by empowering its community and allies with information and tools to directly impact the political process.
Please jump the fold for developing August 12th meet up news.
Joieau and I traveled up to Mt. Mitchell on Wednesday to check out the lay of the land, the facilities and the possibilities for an excellent adventure on August 12th. We had not been up there for almost ten years and were delighted by the new observation deck (above), the restaurant and the way everything looked. Following is a photo tour along with a draft itinerary. All ideas are welcome. Hope you enjoy, have a great weekend.
Meeting Place
When we arrived at the restaurant parking lot, the surrounding visual drama gave way to a modest entrance to our meeting place.
Once we opened the door, the word modest no long applied as we realized the size and scope of the place with a large restaurant, a gift shop, hanging art and the real bonus, a large open space at one end that is generally open to the public.
The back of the building provides great views with a terrific patio and entrance to the original Black Mountain trail.

Finishing the day
From Romantic Asheville: “A must stop for art lovers is the Folk Art Center in Asheville, featuring the finest in traditional and contemporary craft of the Southern Appalachians. Shop the wonderful Southern Highland Craft Guild store with a big variety of creations from hundreds of artists, browse rotating exhibitions in several galleries and watch an artist at work.” (optional)
Cold beverages and nachos at a great little restaurant with easy access to thoroughfares. If the size of the event grows too large, there are other choices close by we can consider as we get closer to the date.
