Pacific Northwest
Sunny and breezy today in the Salish Sea. Southwest wind at 10 knots this morning. Temperature 68ºF.
Clams were the theme at a recent stroll on a nearby beach.
I’m trying out Flickr as a site to import photos from. Let’s see how they come out.
Large 1024 x 740:
Hmmm. That photo looks squeezed widthwise in the draft. Edit: looks fine when published on my computer.
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.
We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.
Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.

Let’s try a smaller size —
Medium 800 x 578:
Still a bit distorted in draft. Edit: but ok published.
Smaller -
Medium 640 x 443:
The horse Horse Clam photo fits fully in the draft page, about 85% of the page width. Edit: full width when published.
Let’s try a large, for a wide angle, 1024 x 683:
with a medium for the closeup 800 x 534:
A medium for a closeup 594 x 640, a vertically oriented image:
Let’s try a smaller size,
or Medium 464 x 500:
Doesn’t fill the page. Looks like images need to be at least 600 wide.
The shape we see is not a distortion. Horse clams can not completely close their shells, because their siphons are too large to withdraw inside. Shells grow with a space on one end. Siphons are used to 1) bring seawater inside so oxygen and planktonic food can be filtered out, and 2) dispose of filtered seawater, waste and also eggs or sperm in the summer reproductive season.
Medium 800 x 602 for a driftwood critter:
or medium 640 x 481:
Images look the same, but with the smaller one not filling the column. 800 a good size for width? Edit: both fill column when published.
Here we get a look at a live clam, after a gull has dropped it from 10 feet to break the shell.
Medium 800 x 618
and a smaller view for the guts, 640 x 494:
Preliminary conclusion based on how they look in draft: 800 is best for width. Let’s see what they look like when published. (Edit: Conclusion after publishing: images are not distorted when published no matter the size. 800 is the minimum size to fill the column. Image quality is very good. This is based on what I see on my iPad. I’d be interested to hear if these look any different to you! Thanks)
More importantly…
