My last story was about another commercial which compared to this is benign ( Booking’s “There’s nothing more important to me than my vacation.” )
This commercial currently being aired by McDonald’s bothered me the first time I saw it.
I saw it as a stereotype of a passive black man whose boss feels he can’t read an important himself.
Note how the white manager snatches the scholarship acceptance letter from the black employee.
The camera cuts away but the sound effect is there. Listen for the “snap” sound.
Why didn’t they show the employee opening and reading the letter himself?
This makes me suspicious about motivations behind the highly publicized scholarship programs offered by McDonald’s.
What do you think?
