Sure, Republican Senators may be upset that Donald Trump is making daily jabs, stabs, and punches at their pal and former colleague Jefferson Sessions—not so upset that they don’t bend the knee to Trump’s bullying, but … upset. Just a little. If no one minds.
Meanwhile, Mike Pence is here to clear things up by explaining that using interviews, press conferences and Twitter to belittle someone who he could reach out to personally is actually Trump’s best quality.
“He was disappointed with the attorney general’s decision to recuse himself and to not know about his intension to do so before he was confirmed as the attorney general of the United States,” Pence said, appearing on Fox News with Tucker Carlson Wednesday night. “The Washington way is to talk behind people’s backs. But that’s not President Donald Trump’s approach. One of the great things about this President is you will always know where you stand.”
Yes. Donald Trump, like his friend the Mooch, is a front-stabber. Which is just the best. Because having your name dragged through the mud, your loyalty questioned, and your competence called into doubt is absolutely the best way to handle personnel issues. Trump is practically writing an HR manual.
“I think one of the President’s virtues is his candor. … People know we have a president who says what he means and means what he says. There’s no attempt to hide his feelings.”
It’s not just that Trump has the emotional maturity of a two-year-old. That’s his good side.
With Senators lining up to say that Trump should stop picking on Sessions or else … they’ll still do exactly what Trump wants, there is no “else,” Trump has for the moment held up on having Jefferson Sessions walk from the Robert Kennedy Building to the White House followed by Hope Hicks shouting “shame!”
But as Pence says:
“Every member of the cabinet can know that you will always know where you stand with President Trump.”
Yes, and this is what every member of Trump’s staff should know.
As you watch the President publicly troll, trash and torment Attorney General Jeff Sessions every day -- the man who was the first senator to endorse him, who never abandoned his candidate (even in the darkest days of the Access Hollywood tape), who happily gave up a 20-year Senate career to serve -- you have to understand: this could happen to you.
And that isn't going to change.
Oh, and the reason Trump is trying to make Jeff Sessions resign is so that he can appoint someone who will fire Robert Mueller and end the Russia investigation. Minor detail.
