WE DID IT!! Senate Republicans tried to sneak in an Obamacare repeal in the dead of night and they failed! Obamacare lives another day, along with the tens of millions of Americans who gained access to affordable health care as a result of it.
Hundreds of thousands of members of the Daily Kos community—and countless more people nationwide—produced some incredibly powerful grassroots activism to protect health care coverage for tens of millions of Americans.
Campaign Action
This spring and summer, 574,337 of you took action via Daily Kos to block Trumpcare in the House and Senate and defend protections for people with pre-existing conditions, Medicaid, Planned Parenthood funding, and so much more. This is how you did it:
-
You made over 100,000 phone calls to Republican senators since June 8—all from constituents of those senators!
-
You sent over half a million letters to Senate Republican offices since June 8.
-
Tens of thousands of you showed up demanding to be heard at town hall meetings, rallies and protests.
-
You wrote thousands upon thousands of stories here at Daily Kos, telling us the deeply personal stories that made defending Obamacare a very personal fight for you.
-
You raised over $1,600,000 to defeat House Republicans who voted to repeal Obamacare, and $200,000 to defeat Senate Republicans who did the same. Remember, we only won this battle by one vote—every seat matters.
You also received daily emails from me and my colleagues on the Daily Kos activism team urging you to act and you responded every single day. You didn't give up, and this victory belongs to you.
I wept last night as I watched the votes come in and I keep crying throughout the day. Obamacare has been so important to my family. It saved my mother's life. And this week, as I mark the 19th anniversary of my father's passing after a long illness, I can't help but think how much different my family life would have been if my daddy had Obamacare.
Now, thanks to you, you fierce and gorgeous activists, more and more of our families will know the peace of fighting illness and disease without fear of losing everything.
We are celebrating today, and we deserve it. But we must also remember that Republicans have been gunning for Obamacare for seven years, and they're unlikely to stop now. We must remain diligent.
I'm tired, y’all. This has been a grueling ordeal and it's consumed me. Today, because of your dedication, I get to take a short rest. I urge you to celebrate and rest, too. Then, be ready to keep fighting.
