That’s right! From out of the shadows the mighty Freewayblogger Army is rising up for a mass action over Labor Day weekend, and we’re inviting YOU to join us! Signs must be publicly posted, non-commercial, non-violent and temporary (easily removable without leaving a trace: no adhesives, locks or graffiti. Secure cardboard to fencing with coat hangars and bungee cords.)
Freeway overpasses not your cup of tea? No problem! Libraries, Parks, City Hall… Any public area is fair game for posting your opinion! Remember, when it comes to political speech, public property is your property!
Are you 75 or older? We’ve got you covered! Here’s how to post a sign on a freeway practically without having to leave your car!
Here’s how to make a sign in five minutes using just cardboard and duct tape!
Here’s how to make a whole bunch of signs for practically nothing!
And here’s 100 Reasons Why You Should.
I know what you’re thinking, “Freewayblogger, I know it’s fun and easy and my patriotic duty, but does it really do any good?”
Great question — I’m really glad I pretended you asked it. Before I started doing it, freeway signposting was done primarily on bedsheets: difficult to post and nearly impossible to read. By adding the ease and legibility of cardboard to the medium I thought it would catch on virally through the strength of sheer example alone. I thought that by wresting political discourse from the grip of corporations and the government and putting it back in the hands of the individual, we would stop the war in Iraq, save the planet from environmental disaster, and usher in a new era of peace and prosperity for all mankind, and that love, charity and mutual respect among all nations, races and religions would reign over the earth for the next thousand years.
That didn’t happen.
What did happen though was that a couple hundred of us put up signs and got a lot of press — here in the U.S. of course, but especially overseas. Articles about freewayblogging appeared in Le Monde, Der Stern, The Guardian, Belgium’s De Morgan and others. I received over a thousand e-mails from Europe all saying the same thing: “Thank you for reaffirming my faith in the American People.” And that was during the George W. Bush Presidency… imagine how badly that faith needs reaffirming now.
I’ve hired fellow Kossack Angela Marx to help me with social media and the great Sev Williams to help with publicity. We’ll be doing press releases here in the US before the event, but more importantly, we’ll be doing them internationally, along with pictures, afterwards.
Things have a way of working out differently than planned — perhaps in simply trying to better our nation’s reputation abroad we’ll end up accidentally sending the Trumps, Pence’s and the GOP leadership scurrying off to Russia where they belong. Who knows? One thing I can say for sure though, if that, or anything like it happens, it’ll be because of the First Amendment: far and away the most powerful tool we’ve got.
