Following the earlier resignation of Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier, Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank has stepped down from President Donald Trump’s Manufacturing Council, according to a tweet from the company. Under Armour is the shoe manufacturer endorsed by the NBA’s Golden State Warriors MVP and championship guard Steph Curry, among others.
In February, Plank described Trump as an asset to the country. At that time Curry and other clients objected to supporting Trump.
A number of celebrity Under Armour endorsers — including basketball star Stephen Curry and ballerina Misty Copeland — released statements saying they did not agree with Plank’s assessment.
But Plank seems to have reached his limit, telling the Baltimore Sun:
“ … Under Armour engages in innovation and sports, not politics,” Plank said in a statement posted to Twitter. “I love our country and our company and will continue to focus my efforts on inspiring every person that they can do anything through the power of sport which promotes unity, diversity and inclusion.”
