In today’s New York Times article Ms Dowd appears to regret some of President Trump’s deplorable acts.
Ms. Dowd's galactic lack of self-awareness remains as obvious as the lechery, immorality, bigotry and deceitfulness of the President. All were on view to anyone with even the dimmest grasp of reality long before Trump even rode down the elevator in his fake gilt tower.
For eight long years she constantly complained and demeaned—always “Barry,” written in contempt, and never Obama, much less the "Mr President” title he actually won twice in both the popular and electoral college—President Obama. I have always thought that was closeted racism doing her writing, but never had any actual proof until her adoring support for Donald Trump.
The source of her antipathy toward former First Lady, former Watergate prosecutor, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton always eluded me. Perhaps it was simple jealousy: the closest Maureen Dowd will ever approach any of these titles will be as Secretary of Hate.
During the Trump campaign, and for a while after, Ms Dowd was far more concerned in maintaining her place on Trump's dinner invitation list ("his wife presided, but didn't speak, like a lovely silent sphynx" was just one example of her gushing prose supporting this monster) than she was about the country, much less the Constitution.
She helped get him elected. Presumably she imagined her race based contempt for President Obama and anti-Hillary tirades would guarantee her a steady stream of invitations to the White House. I gather that the spot on the mantle where she was planning to display those invitations, presumably in faux-platinum frames as obviously fake as her new found regret, remain not just empty, but full of dust.
Now, perhaps the very beginnings of an understanding of what this monster stands for are beginning to make a dent, and she is learning that racism, bigotry, white supremacy, homophobia, and anti-Semitism are less socially acceptable than she imagined. Perhaps she is embarrassed for being called out for what she not only tolerated and supported, but promoted.
So she tells her little story about how her admirable father stood up to the Klan, in a pathetic attempt to claim some sliver of morality thru genetics.
I'm sorry: Maureen, it was your father who was a decent human being, not you.
Trump and his children are all alike in the fundamental indecency, immorality, and dishonesty. In that bloodline, the DNA runs true. Perhaps Dowd imagines that she can claim to have inherited some fundamental decency from her father in a pathetic attempt to exculpate--now that Trump no longer needs her or wants her around—her behavior, or to disguise it.
However, Maureen Dowd is not her father. Her behavior as a Trump enabler demeans and shames his line.
