Univision’s Ilia Calderon sat down with Christian Barker, the imperial wizard of the Loyal White Knights of the KKK in Pelham, North Carolina, and his wife, Amanda. Calderon is a Latina woman. Barker and his wife—according to the segment’s producers—knew beforehand that the interview would be conducted by a woman of color. Maybe it was being confronted by a real-life person rather than a drawing on a bar napkin that the Barker’s racist friend did in fourth grade, but things got heated and racist and hateful very quickly.
“Why don’t you go back?” Barker said in the interview, which aired Sunday night. “We have nothing here in America; y’all keep flooding it. … We’re going to chase you out of here.”
“Are you going to chase me out of here?” Calderón questioned.
“No, we’re going to burn you out,” he said.
Calderon brought up the great kryptonite for people like Barker—grade school math. Asking him how he planned on “burning out” 11 million undocumented immigrants, Barker’s reply wasn’t shocking so much as pathetically hateful and predictable.
Don’t matter. We killed 6 million Jews the last time. Eleven million is nothing.
Hold your horses, everybody. Remember, there are many sides to this issue.
Barker: To me you’re a nigger. That’s it. That’s it to me.
Give me a second to give another side, please! Later on in the interview during an exchange where Christian Barker (the name is perfect) and his wife explain that Leviticus 19:18 is about loving the neighbor of your own people—not, you know … other people—Calderon asks him point-blank whether or not he thinks he is racist.
Barker: No. I think everybody deserves the right to live.
Except the six million Jews and the 11 million undocumented immigrants he wants to “burn out,” I guess? Makes total sense. I think the famous Jew Jesus of Nazareth once said something similar.
The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
