Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell apparently felt he had to say something after Tuesday's double-whammy of his private feud with Donald Trump going public and Trump's subsequent declaration of war against the Republican Senate. Seriously, Trump said he would shut the government down if Congress didn't bow to his will and he once again insisted that the Senate change its rules to, again, bend to his will.
Those would be fighting words to any other self-respecting leader of the Senate. Seriously, can you imagine what former Democratic leader Sen. Harry Reid would have said to that kind of crap. Not McConnell. He issued the most milquetoast statement about how he and Trump have shared goals.
The President and I, and our teams, have been and continue to be in regular contact about our shared goals. We are working together to develop tax reform and infrastructure legislation so we can grow the economy and create jobs; to prevent a government default; to fund the government so we can advance our priorities in the short and long terms; to pass the defense authorization and defense appropriations bills so we can support out troops and help implement an effective strategy against ISIL; to provide relief from Obamacare; and to continue our progress for our nation's veterans.
"We have a lot of work ahead of us, and we are committed to advancing out shared agenda together and anyone who suggest otherwise is clearly not part of the conversation."
So apparently the reports are correct—Trump and McConnell haven't been talking because that's sure as hell not the agenda Trump has been focusing on. There's no tax bill from him. There's no infrastructure bill from him. McConnell's statement says absolutely nothing about building a wall.
If this is supposed to end talk about the Republican civil war, it failed.
